trash is addicting!!!

Haa haa! yes it is -after finishing the super fun mural in Venice last month, I jumped into prepping for my solo show at Co-op 28 in Los Feliz, on October 22nd. I decided to combine garbage as a use for color in my charcoal pieces, and I'm having alot of fun....so much more to do before the show, though! Here are a few samples so far :)

Yey!!! The mural made entirely out of trash is complete! I am posting some photos of the installation process all the way through to the fun finale :) it was a great project, everyone was really wonderful to work with, and I'd love to do another gig like this again in the future........

I am super psyched about a job I have right now creating a 10 ft by 14 ft mural down in Venice Beach - it will be created entirely out of TRASH. As in garbage. Smelly, but fun :) The great thing is that it is a replica of a poster advertising a new documentary that is premiering live on Facebook, September 20th, about cleaning up the world's beaches. Hence, the use of trash..... I was fortunate enough to get the job through a good friend of mine who owns the Eco-Logical Gallery of Los Angeles, Peter Schulberg - he and I and a few others will be installing the mural and working on it onsite August 29-Sept 1, so come on down and visit us!

Been doing a TON of collecting, cutting, and sorting trash...a HUGE thanks for friends and organizations helping us out collecting the garbage: Sustain L.A., and Trash for Teaching, especially.

Ok, so ever since my last trip to Europe, I have been obsessed with crosses, churches, and gargoyles........anything ancient and gothic :) Here is the latest charcoal drawing in my series - it is much more raw than the others as I grabbed a piece of recycled masonite with old artwork already on it, and painted over it - whereas the previous pieces were done on clean new BFK Reeves.

Kid's Art Lesson on Jim Dine

Last week's kid's art lesson (they were ages 7 and 8 yrs.) was all about the artist Jim Dine. I first talked a little bit about his life: he was born in 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio (showed the kids on the map) and I made sure to tell them that he is still alive today, and still creating artwork even at age 75...no one is ever too old to create art :)
I also told the kids that, just like Andy Warhol, Jim Dine created "pop" art (short for popular), in which he drew and painted common objects that he saw everyday. He moved to New York City after graduating in art from college, and was there the same time as Andy Warhol, except he drew different things than Andy. He sketched alot of tools, such as wrenches, saws, hammers, etc. We went around the classroom and each child had to name a tool to draw (we kind of had to go over again what exactly a tool was, as some of them mentioned random things like a lamp, or a lawnmower...)
Then we discussed negative space versus positive space, as Jim played around quite a bit with this concept in his tool drawings. I drew two small squares: one was white with a black ball in the middle, and the other was black, with a white ball in the middle. We decided that negative space is where the white paper shows through, (not filled in) and positive space is the black (or the part that is filled in with color. ) I am posting a couple of Jim's tool drawings, then a few of the kids pastel pieces of their tools, using both negative and positive space in their objects....

I just started the spring session up at Barnsdall Art Park in Hollywood, teaching kids ages 4 - 12....
they are dolls - all great kids!
I am gonna post (every so often) some of their art projects, and explain how we did them in case any moms out there are looking for ideas to do with their children at home :)

Class 1: Studying Famous Artists
Yesterday we studied Andy Warhol in my 7-9 yr old class. Really I have done this project with 5 yr olds and they crank out some great stuff, too, so it can work with varying ages......here is what I shared with them about Andy:

He was born in 1928, in Pennsylvania, and drew alot when he was a kid. His parents were quite supportive of him, and sent him to art school, where he learned to become a professional artist. He moved to New York City, and eventually began drawing everyday things that he would see, such as Campbell Soup cans, Brillo pad boxes, and a lot of self portraits. He concentrated on drawing the same shapes/objects over and over (repetitive patterns - we go over what a pattern is) but using different colors in each.

It helps while explaining all this to show kids photos of the soup can dress, the portraits he did of himself, and of Marilyn Monroe, where her faces are all various colors......I had the kids choose either a person or an object that they see everyday to draw in Andy's style....here are some of the photos I show the kids, plus a few of the finished pieces :)

My studio happens to be sandwiched in between two salvage yards/antique stores in North Hollywood - Scavenger's Paradise, which is an excellent old spanish style stucco church, and Glass Horizons, which specializes in stain glass windows as well as old one of a kind treasures......I was meandering through Glass Horizons and found this gorgeous bible (all water stained with brown pages) from 1841. This catapulted me into drawing 100 crosses on 100 pages of the bible...I am up to 42....here is a sneak peak, hope you enjoy!

OK this maaaay be a done piece! This is another low res photo taken with my phone, but it gets the idea across......it was quite fun and a challenge to do such a large detailed piece......makes me want to do more.......

I am still working on the large 7 ft. by 7 ft. commissioned oil painting of a Tuscany landscape...here is a sneak preview of it in progress. I still need to finish up the tiles on the bottom, add more greenery to the fields, then combine colors throughout to make it consistent....

OK! So these newer pieces are Italy inspired (how could one NOT be inspired after a trip to Rome???)
They are part of my ongoing series of birds, rooftops, and gargoyles :) I hope you enjoy them! I am loving working on the tan Reeves BFK sheets of paper -they really take to the charcoal well, even if they are used primarily for printmaking....

This month, my brother and I started a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing public awareness of environmental protection, human rights and animal advocacy concerns, through art. Our first project will be published in the LA Weekly on Feb. 4th and deals with the ammonia saturated meat being fed to school children and the public in the United States. It gives information as to what you can do about it to make a positive change. Zombies, Blood, and Mohawks are OK, but not Gay Marriage

Last week I was fortunate to be chosen as one of a number of artists to get a super fun assignment - the rules were as follows: choose a classic Hanna Barbara character and do a painting with them in it, for a special art exhibition to be shown in the new year at the studios. ANY kind of theme, any painting. I was even told that another artist was doing one with zombies, blood, and I think Tweety with a mohawk, etc. So I thought, "wow, I can do anything!" and was psyched.

My idea was a NO ON PROP 8 theme. Below is the sketch. I really liked it and was all excited to paint the stained glass windows, researching out what colors are best for stained glass, etc...unfortunately, the sketch got rejected, and was said to be too political : (

But zombies and blood are OK? What is wrong with this comparison???? Is it because zombies are not a real "threat?" OR ARE THEY? I don't fault the art director at all when she would not present it, as she was just covering herself from getting reprimanded. But man, I guess I was hoping we were more progressive than this.

I wanted to share with you some simple drawings that I recently did, which were silkscreened onto a very hip line of purses put out by a great Los Angeles designer, M.Andonia. Her purses are now in high end stores all over the world, and this line is rumored to be featured in an upcoming issue of Teen Vogue magazine.

Recently I created an illustration for Resistance Magazine, a brand new awesome environmentally themed journal which makes you think and is very informative. This illustration was for an incredible article regarding the Royal Dutch Shell oil company agreeing to settle a lawsuit which payed out the Ogoni people in Nigeria for the company's alleged involvement with the Nigerian military's execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other protestors in 1995. This issue (#2) comes out this Monday, October 19, at Borders Books, and hundreds of other locations in the US and Canada....check it out!

Fairy Themed Mural for girls' bedroom

This summer I designed and created a fairy themed mural for two little girl's, ages 3 and 5 years old, for their bedroom. The room was recently remodeled, complete with a large loft above their bunkbeds, along with a high cathedral ceiling to let afternoon light in. Well, I am ALMOST done with t his mural project. It has really been the neverending saga, and now I just have to paint the door and then it will take off for outerspace and leave me forever!!!!!!! ha ha actually it was a super fun one with lot's of leadway for creativity. I loved it.

Here are a coupla pics at the client's house, while I am watching these awesome guys work their magic, especially in this VERY small room! Now I just have to go back and paint the ceiling, and that wall that sticks out on the top right onsite......

I am just saying right now, that every time I get a picture of this adorable boy I am posting it onto this blog!!!! My very best friend, Marianne, won the lottery (actually he is better than the lottery) when she adopted this true gem from Russia, named Val (short for Valentine).

He is the best - so get used to seeing him as much as possible on this blog :)

Oh, and also in the picture is "biggie" the dog, and a cool mural in NYC.

Wolfgang Bloch

One of my friends back in college (waaay back when :) was named Wolfgang Bloch. I haven't kept in touch with him, or seen him in years, but our mutual friend, Erich, told me just last week that Wolfgang has been doing a lot of painting, and has an exhibition right now at the Laguna Art Museum. (www.lagunaartmuseum.org) We went online and viewed his artwork, and I was blown away - his paintings are gorgeous!! I had to post one here, along with a link to his website, as I love his pieces - also the fact that he puts a little ocean wave in most of the pieces. About 6 years or so ago, my friend, Christina Ortega, commissioned me to create an illustration for the cover of her music CD. (She has a WONDERFUL voice - check it out at www.cdbaby.com/cd/christinao!! Her music is described as "Mexican vaqueros ride with American cowboys in the bilingual collection of old and new songs delivered with the powerful wallop of a bluegrass band that found its inspiration in cowboy culture.....and perhaps a little bit of tequila.")

But the point of this whole post is that I checked my email recently and this picture popped up of my illustration I did for her on a random cake! Turns out, her friends hired her to sing at their party, and then decorated their cake to match the theme.....here is the original artwork, next to the pic of the cake - very funny! I wonder how it tastes though.........

I am sitting here looking out my window at all the brown and yellow leaves falling in the front yard (yes we do have color changes here in LA in autumn!) and realizing that fall is here, and it's October already, and that means one fun thing: HALLOWEEN! (plus they are selling pumpkins outside of Trader Joe's now....) check out this card done by my friend Shino and her husband, Ken, who have this cool letter press company they started called Fugu Fugu Press. I love their designs, and all their cards are printed on 100% recycled paper, using only soybased ink. Their website is www.fugufugupress.com. Outer Space Murals

I have been commissioned to work for the last two months on a series of murals for a playroom for two little boys. The theme given to me was "outer space." Here are a couple of pics of the first one in progress, then finished. I will post the next one, once it is done! They are huge, I have to say, so I rented out a space at this great gallery in North Hollywood called "Satsuma Gallery." It is a co-op with 4 other artists, who are all VERY sweet and inspiring.
